Feelin Groovy

After having another look at the cafe walls I have developed a clear image of how I expect them to look once I have done my illustrations. The place is looking great.
My design is a large tree which sprouts out colourful leaves, butterflies, birds ect
Under the tree is a happy hippy girl who is carefree and groovy!

I will be using different fonts to write fun sayings typical of the hippy culture
below is a quick test of the saying 'feelin groovy', I prefer a more
organic/handmade font but tried this digital version on photoshop

Hippy Drawing

Steveston Harbour

Steveston Harbour is where we are living and the view of the boats is incredible.

We have been taking walks along the seafront or visiting the seafood markets to look at the exotic finds. The smell of the salty sea agrees with my nose which up until now was  only accustomed to city smells. I watched the beginning of 'dark shadows' on the plane over and the town really reminds me of where I am now. The murky sky over the sea, the sound of seagulls circling ahead and the small town village where most people know each other’s names. I will be posting plenty of photos from this quaint little town

Rawk the Planet

In Steveston I came across a vegan cafe that is soon to be opening called 'rawk the planet'. I spoke to the owners about me collaborating with them for the design of the space. I have lots of ideas and have gathered images which hopefully fit their vision.

j
This board above is what I have in my head, linked to the theme of making vegan food ‘fun’. The hippy in the right hand corner is a favourite illustration of mine. The overall style is quite flat and graphic but this is quite a current look (especially the fonts).

This second moodboard uses more of the colours the shop seemed to be heading towards- bright greens and earthy tones. I think these tree images are really nice. Again I looked at some fonts but with more focus on 60s type. The campervan could be fun

Here are a few examples of some drawings I have done previously which have small elements of the 60s style, feature animals or similar colours.

Animatic

So I'm going to post my 'Reign of the Veg' film but thought I would post the animatic first.
'Reign of the Veg' was the film I made in my final year at university.
These are some stills from the animatic

Lost

Lost

Week 1 in Canada

These are a few photos I have taken since moving to Steveston, Canada. I have yet to take photos of the harbor, there are some wonderful whitewashed boats.
On our first night we dined in an Irish pub where I spotted my first Halloween display. A group of pumpkins lined outside then inside was a small table with assortments of harvest/October/Halloween nicnacs. At a table sat a little man made from straw.
Over the next few days we saw more and more Halloween displays!

This is a checklist from the supermarket a few days before thanksgiving.
We got invited to 2 thanksgiving dinners, both were great.
At one I had a sweet potato and walnut mash- delicious
This is Lister, she is a lizard who lives with us in a little tropical aquarium.
I like picking her up each day and stroking her little head.
sometimes she closes her eyes with relaxation
Our little patio with its little iron table and chairs- very bistro.
it will be nicer to dine out here when it gets warmer again
This is a Halloween shop called 'spirit', it is insane! there were so many models of witches, zombies and ghouls. They even had zombie babies which were very freaky. The several smoke machines round the shop gave it a misty fog.

Abigail's Party

Recently I rewatched 'Abigail's Party' (1977). The Mike Leigh classic stars Alison Steadman as the smoking, seductive hostess Beverly. Beverly is such a fascinating character and I couldn't help but try capture some of that in an illustration.

I made another version without using her tradmark orange dress. while this composition works, it does not feel like Beverly's character. Beverly is brash and the whites suggest a subtle nature- which is certainly not Bev! I like my addition of bubbles to capture that 70s party feel. I could add some party food/nibbles too to heighten that cocktail hour style and a martini glass complete with olives.

Iv been meaning to put all my research from last year onto my blog and now I am moved into our new apartment I have more free time...until I find/start a new job!

My Showreel

So I have updated my showreel since graduating university and here is the link: https://vimeo.com/50540194

I didn't put bits from all my work on the showreel as I wanted the piece to have an overall similar feel. I tried to put the work I felt represented me most, mostly humourous pieces that are a little dark in theme but generally bright in colour and characteristic.
