Week 1 in Canada

  

These are a few photos I have taken since moving to Steveston, Canada. I have yet to take photos of the harbor, there are some wonderful whitewashed boats.

On our first night we dined in an Irish pub where I spotted my first Halloween display. A group of pumpkins lined outside then inside was a small table with assortments of harvest/October/Halloween nicnacs. At a table sat a little man made from straw.

Over the next few days we saw more and more Halloween displays!

 

This is a checklist from the supermarket a few days before thanksgiving.

We got invited to 2 thanksgiving dinners, both were great.

At one I had a sweet potato and walnut mash- delicious

This is Lister, she is a lizard who lives with us in a little tropical aquarium.

I like picking her up each day and stroking her little head.

sometimes she closes her eyes with relaxation

Our little patio with its little iron table and chairs- very bistro. 

it will be nicer to dine out here when it gets warmer again

 This is a Halloween shop called 'spirit', it is insane! there were so many models of witches, zombies and ghouls. They even had zombie babies which were very freaky. The several smoke machines round the shop gave it a misty fog.

Abigail's Party

Recently I rewatched 'Abigail's Party' (1977). The Mike Leigh classic stars Alison Steadman as the smoking, seductive hostess Beverly. Beverly is such a fascinating character and I couldn't help but try capture some of that in an illustration.

I made another version without using her tradmark orange dress. while this composition works, it does not feel like Beverly's character. Beverly is brash and the whites suggest a subtle nature- which is certainly not Bev! I like my addition of bubbles to capture that 70s party feel. I could add some party food/nibbles too to heighten that cocktail hour style and a martini glass complete with olives.

Research from last year

I took these last year and used them for concept designs for the Ham House project. I spent alot of time challenging Ophelia, lying in flowerbeds. Iv been meaning to put all my research from last year onto my blog and now I am moved into our new apartment I have more free time...until I find/start a new job!

I didn't put bits from all my work on the showreel as I wanted the piece to have an overall similar feel. I tried to put the work I felt represented me most, mostly humourous pieces that are a little dark in theme but generally bright in colour and characteristic.

Preparing for my Move!

So...In less than a week I am moving to Canada!!

Two days after I arrive I start working as a volunteer at 'The Vancouver International Film Festival'. What a great way to start my journey in Vancouver, by sampling some of their finest cinema!?

The program is rich in variety and there are many films which have already caught my eye . Im not sure how much Il be working in the actual cinema but hopefully Il get to catch them at some point. Here are some which excite me!

I'm sure there will be some animation too which should be interesting.

I have spent 2 weeks already clearing out my bedroom and coal cupboard (my cupboard in the hall that retains its original feature- a hatch for shovelling coal into).

Im constantly collecting leaflets/postcards/magazine cut-outs and I love nothing more than a good bootsale.... so you can imagine how many things Ive accumulated over these years. Deciding what to keep and what to throw away was a real dilemma for me.

 When packing a suitcase for a year away you have to get tactical

I am sad to leave much of my sticker collection behind but I have to be practical...In the Canadian winter stickers will not keep me warm

Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde

I had been eagerly awaiting the ‘Pre-Raphaelites: Victorian Avant-Garde’ exhibition to open at Tate Britain and visited it on Wednesday with my friend Ginevra. The exhibition has had a lot of press but I wasn’t expecting the space to be so busy

 

 

Ever since working together on the film project in Richmond’s ham house, Ginevra and I have reawakened our excitement for the pre-Raphaelite artists. From a young age we had both been made aware of these artists but it was inspiring to rediscover them at an older age with more perception and understanding.

Being so alert to nature at Ham house made Millais’ ‘Ophelia’ ever more poignant. The assortment of plants, trees and open spaces became electric in their territory and we strived to create something that could reflect this. 

 

Ginevra and I finished our work at Ham House in early 2012 so visiting the Tate now was a refreshing revisit to those memories and feelings. 

It was hard to not be overwhelmed by the amount of glorious paintings that were collected in this one space. So many paintings I have grown up with, now outstretched before me. The place was bliss

 

And what better time to visit such an exhibition just as autumn is rearing its head? The smoky atmosphere of ‘Autumn Leaves’ excites me for the October/November months. The whole feeling the movement evokes of harvest ripeness, sunsets and medieval romanticism.

Nora

I made a quick sketch of a woman, then painted her with watercolours. 

I used to make very quick drawings and paint them in a similar rushed style- and I hadn't worked this way for a long time. I then scanned her into photoshop and added a background from a drawing I had done two years ago. The woman looked like a 'Nora' so that is what I named her. Since graduating from art college I am enjoying painting again just for pleasure.
